EC: Using Young Adult Literature for Compassion

There is a grey area in character education programming and emotional intelligence training in our schools today which deals with the lack of teaching compassion through adverse situations. As we teach the concept of äóìcompassionäó through literature, there are levels of compassion based on situational factors of life that students will inevitably go through. As characters in our own landscape, literature analysis through protagonist and antagonist characterization plotlines can connect with students on levels that we might not be able to reach when we first conceive our lessons and plan our instruction. In this session, participants will be able to:Understand and practice instructional concepts that define various forms of compassion within different contexts of life not covered by traditional character education programming, Link literature ideas to specific instructional goals for fostering a compassionate environment both inside and outside of school, Survey various young adult literature passages that can highlight and strengthen how we can explicitly teach compassion to our students., Gather ideas for targeted, thematic instruction for compassion training within the historical literary conflict model types: Wo(Man) versus Wo(Man), Wo(Man) versus Nature, and Wo(Man) versus Self.
