EC: Students Who Write, “Narratively”

Writing is often rubric-based, grade-based, and task-based. Yet, we sometimes forget that writing is also voice-based. Some of the most effective student writing outcomes and products consist of narratives that capture authentic student voice about open topics that we, as educators, can mine for when working with students. As we tend to steer our writing instruction towards high-stakes testing preparation, participants in this workshop will be able to: Identify and learn about the continuum of writing tasks that we äóìhardäó grade, holistically critique äóìsoft gradeäó, or mine for in very informal ways (product-based only), Survey a wide collection of student driven narratives that showcase intellect, problem-solving, and the evocation of emotion, Understand and practice the writing strategy of äóìhealthy treasonäó through a series of writing prompts that will draw out student voice in powerful ways, and Align writing tasks for students with classroom or school-wide goals that will reform and transform school culture.
