The field of construction project management is diverse and enormously complex. There are several major classifications of construction that differ uniquely from each other: residential, commercial building, heavy highway, utility, and industrial projects. Construction project managers plan and direct the building and maintenance of everything from bridges to high-rises to wastewater systems.

What does a construction project manager do?

They usually have the satisfaction of seeing a job through from start to finish. In a typical day, project managers might meet with owners, examine a work breakdown structure (WBS), negotiate with sub-contractors, and directly supervise crews. Such projects involve much time and expense, and close management control of them is required if they are to be completed on time and within budget. Their qualifications include both formal education and informal on-the-job training, and their knowledge encompasses construction materials and methods, mathematics, communications, safety, human resources, scheduling, and customer service, among other areas. This one-level curriculum covers topics such as Construction Documents, Resource Control, and Continuous Improvement.

Become a Construction Project Manager and be in charge of the overall planning and control of a project; this requires a high level of expertise across a wide range of disciplines. The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Construction Project Management Certification program is designed to provide you with knowledge of project planning and design, estimating, scheduling, contract documents along with the techniques and technology necessary to be a successful construction project manager.
