Commercial Truck Driver Career Overview
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers transport goods from one location to another. Most tractor-trailer drivers operate trucks with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) capacity of more than 26,000 pounds. These drivers are required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License. Some truck drivers deliver goods locally and some over-the-road which spans several states.
Job Duties May Include:
- Time management within the Federal Hours of Services Rules
- Follow all applicable traffic laws
- Inspect their trailer before and after the trip, and report to maintenance when needed
- Keep a log of their activities
- Follow all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
- Keep their truck and associated equipment clean and in good working order
Locally and regionally, professional truck drivers are in high-demand. By obtaining your CDL-A you can look to make $40,000 to $50,000 in your first year of driving!

Professional Truck Driver Training Program
In this 160-hour program students will be provided the opportunity to gain the necessary entry-level skills to apply for truck driving positions. Students will also have the chance to gain two national credentials that employers respect in this industry.
Participants may receive:
- Commerical Driver’s License – CDL-A

In little as 20 days, you could earn your Commercial Driver’s License – CDL-A! With a national driver shortage of over 200,000, trucking companies are hiring! Both local, regional and Over-the-Road are calling CDS for their graduates. Students hear from several trucking company recruiters while attending school and most students have job offers before they graduate!

We have Full-time classes Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm for four weeks. Our part-time classes run Saturday and Sunday from 8 am until 5 pm for ten weekends. That’s only 20 days!
Our program consists of classroom instruction, various backing maneuvers, and on-the-road training. Students enjoy our hands-on approach to training and are in the trucks the second day. Classroom instruction will take place at Lord Fairfax Community College and a practice range located in Front Royal, Virginia.
During training, student coordinators will meet each student personally to assist in the job placement process. Staff is available to answer questions and help guide students to a company that best suits their needs. Recruiters from various carriers come on-site and give presentations to students about their company. Students can then apply to the employers if they choose. Students are able to report to employers immediately after graduation to the carrier they selected. Most students have multiple pre-hires awaiting them upon graduation.
